Orange recently launched a mobile phone charger that is powered by dance moves. This cool gizmo is being called the ‘Dance Charge’ and is destined to be a hit amongst festival regulars who need to charge their phone when they stay overnight.
The Dance Charge is the payoff after months and months of research into sustainable alternate energy sources to power mobile phones using physical motion. Orange has been working closely with renewable energy company, GotWind, who are also responsible for this year’s groundbreaking Orange ReCharge Pod. Orange says it “commissioned the research into a kinetic energy portable phone charger that would harness the energy created by festival revellers dancing to their favourite bands to ensure a clean and renewable energy source”.
A few Dance Charge prototypes were shown off at the huge Glastonbury Festival. The gizmo weighs in at 180 grams and measures 4.25-inches by 2.5-inches. The actual unit comes with Velcro attachments and both looks and feels like an mp3 player armband.
The Dance Charge works by using a series of weights and magnets to register arm movements. The unit slowly charges up and should allow a user to top up their phone with enough charge to last them the next day. So as long as you keep dancing, you can keep calling!
